Walter Hawkins (May 18, 1949 – July 11, 2010) was an American gospel singer, songwriter, and choir director. He was born in Oakland, California, and grew up in a musical family. His mother, Clara Hawkins, was a noted pianist and composer, and his siblings Edwin Hawkins and Lynette Hawkins-Stephens were also gospel singers.

Hawkins began his music career in the late 1960s as part of the Edwin Hawkins Singers, a gospel group formed by his brother Edwin. He played piano and sang backing vocals for the group's iconic hit, "Oh Happy Day," which became a crossover success and reached the top of the charts.

In 1970, Hawkins formed his own group called the Love Center Choir and became the pastor of the Love Center Church in Oakland, California. Under his leadership, the Love Center Choir gained widespread recognition for their powerful vocal performances and harmonies. They released numerous albums, including the critically acclaimed "Love Alive" series, which featured popular songs like "Marvelous" and "I'm Going Away."

Throughout his career, Walter Hawkins became known for his soulful voice, emotional delivery, and ability to blend traditional gospel with contemporary elements. His music often explored themes of love, faith, and personal transformation. He was a prolific songwriter, penning many of his own songs as well as collaborating with other gospel artists.

Walter Hawkins received several awards and honors for his contributions to gospel music.
